John Clemens Schwartz, 68, of Curwensville died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at the Ridgeview Eldercare & Rehabilitation Center, where he’d been a resident since 1996.
Mr. Schwartz was born in Washington, D.C. Feb. 2, 1944, the son of John F. Schwartz Jr. and Dorothy M. (Kurtz) Schwartz. He was raised in Buffalo, NY and lived there most of his life.
He graduated from Maryvale High School in 1962, where he competed in a variety of sports. He was an all-star in soccer, held the high-jump record for 10 years, played basketball and was voted 1962 Athlete of the Year.
He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in art education from Buffalo State University. He pursued a career in art as a painter and sculptor and his works were displayed in a variety of art shows and collections in Buffalo.
He was affiliated with the Parsonville Assembly of God.
Mr. Schwartz is survived by two children, John Edward and Dawn Marie; three siblings, Linda Anne (Schwartz) Moore of Cambridge, Ontario; James F. Schwartz of Clearfield; and Joanne (Schwartz) Lewis and her husband, David of West Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre St., Philipsburg, with Pastor Ernest Simmers officiating. Mr. Schwartz will be laid to rest in the Mock’s Hill Cemetery, West Decatur.
There will be no public viewing.
