UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After a regular-season title race that lasted until the final weekend of conference clashes, Penn State men’s soccer clinched a share of the Big Ten championship following Michigan’s 1-0 victory over Michigan State Saturday (Nov. 3) night.
Penn State (9-4-3, 3-1-2 B1G) shares the title with Northwestern (10-4-4, 3-1-2 B1G), as both the Nittany Lions and Wildcats finished with 3-1-2 ledgers in conference play, while the Nittany Lions edged out a 1-0 victory in double overtime against the Wildcats Oct. 21. With the tiebreaker advantage, Penn State enters the Big Ten tournament as the No. 1 seed and earns a first-round bye. The conference tournament, hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., begins Wednesday.
The Big Ten regular-season crown is the first for head coach Bob Warming in just his third year at the helm of the Penn State program. Most recently, Barry Gorman’s 2005 Nittany Lion squad capped an undefeated, 6-0-0 Big Ten slate before downing Michigan State and Indiana to claim the conference tournament title. The 2005 Big Ten tournament also took place in Evanston.
One point behind the Nittany Lions and Wildcats, Indiana (11-4-3, 3-2-1 B1G) and Michigan (8-8-1, 3-2-1 B1G) finish tied for third place in league play, followed by Michigan State (8-9-1, 3-3-0) in fifth.
