PENFIELD – The following programs have been announced for the months of November and December at the Parker Dam State Park.
Saturday, Nov. 3
Souder’s Trail
1 p.m. – Meet outside the Park Office
Join in on a relaxed walk on one of the park’s easier trails and enjoy the beauty of the forest in autumn. The trail wanders through evergreens, hardwoods and along Laurel Run. There is often evidence along the way of the critters who roam these woods. Please wear appropriate shoes.
Saturday, Nov. 17
GPS Basics
11 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Learn how to use a recreational GPS unit for things like marking a waypoint, navigating to places you’ve been, or haven’t been, and even geocaching. Learning how to use one could even save you from spending a night in the woods. Bring along your own unit or borrow one of from the park staff.
Beaver Dam Trail
1 p.m. – Meet near Concession Stand
An easy, two-mile walk is waiting along this trail that’s popular with many park visitors. Varying forest habitats present the opportunity to see indications of the large variety of wildlife that call this area home. Yes, an opportunity to see the handiwork of our local beavers should be available too. Please wear the appropriate shoes.
Saturday, Dec. 15
The CCC Experience
11 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
In 2013, we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Learn about what it was like for several young men who experienced this public works program during the Depression.
Trail of New Giants
1 p.m. – Lou and Helen Adams CCC Museum
This is a little more difficult trail because of the terrain, but is only about one-mile long. The view at the top is worth the effort, however. Please wear the appropriate shoes.
Saturday, Dec. 22
Window Birding
11 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
It’s that time of year, when we look out our windows at the birds who will be sticking out winter in the cold and snow. Learn about these birds and ways that we can assist them.
CCC Trail
1 p.m. – Lou and Helen Adams CCC Museum
Probably one of the easiest trails in the park, this walk will travel to the north border of Parker Dam State Park and return. The terrain is flat, and the hike should be peaceful through the recovering mixed hardwood forest. Please wear the appropriate shoes.
