Penn State Extension of Clearfield County has announced that Chelsey Hughes is the 2012 recipient of the Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship. Hughes is a member of the Harmony 4-H Club. Throughout her eight-year involvement as a 4-H member in Clearfield County, Hughes has completed numerous 4-H-releted projects, including poultry, steer, swine, goats and leadership.
In her 4-H club, Hughes currently resides as president and has also held the offices of vice president, treasurer, social chairman and song and game leader throughout her 4-H career.
Over the years, she has attended 4-H Club Officer Training, Regional 4-H Teen Retreat, 4-H and FFA Master Showman Contest, 4-H Club Night with the Altoona Curve, Ag Progress Days and the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Additionally, Hughes has been very active each year at both the Clearfield County Fair and Harmony Grange Fair. She has been rewarded over the years at the fairs with several blue ribbons and has raised champion animals for the Clearfield County 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock and Poultry Sale.
Hughes credits her experience in the 4-H program for helping her improve two main skills, communication and responsibility through both the activities she has attended and her animal projects. She is a 2012 graduate of Harmony Area High School. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Tom and Sherry Hughes of LaJose. She is currently a freshman at St. Francis University, where she’s majoring in chemistry and pre-pharmacy.  She received a scholarship in the amount of $250.
The Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship is open to all 4-H members that are graduating seniors entering into a two- or four-year post high school curriculum.Â
Applications are available at the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension Office and the deadline to apply each year is Aug. 1. Greene was a 30-year leader of the Harmony 4-H Club, who had a true passion to educate and help the 4-H youth understand their true potential.
