The Last Word (editor’s note: some of these were submitted before the NFL brought the regular refs back)
Rusty: “Wow, I’ve had a bad start to the season, but not ready to throw the towel in yet. So, yikes, another tough week. Could be a choppy week for the local squads as they may need their best performances to date to win. Penn State has another chance to win this week, so why not pick them? Regardless of who wins the NFL games, it’s kind of fun to see the players being able to hit and push a little more than they would with the regular officials. And, give them a break – it takes guts to put on the stripes and be the focal point of the season. The alternative is no games, and that would be no fun at all.”
Chris: “Penn State will get its first test since Week Two, but I like the way the offense is running under Matt McGloin. Pretty amazing what the kid can do when he’s “coached up” by someone who understands how offenses (and quarterbacks) work. The Nittany Lion offense is humming right now. Imagine how good it could have been with Silas Redd and Justin Brown. As for the NFL, good to see the regular referees back in the fold.”
Dave: “Should be some GREAT high school action this week – every local team faces a tough test. The Big Ten is really down this year, but Michigan State can begin to lay their claim as the league’s best with a win over the Buckeyes. I have no clue how good Penn State actually is – but it’s pretty clear that Illinios is not good at all, so this game should be a good litmus test. I keep picking the Eagles despite their obvious turnover problems – if they commit four turnovers again this week, I’m off the bandwagon. Bold prediction of the week: loser of the Bears-Cowboys game won’t make the playoffs. As for the refs, I said my piece in the column this week – glad the veterans are back!”
Dustin: “My thoughts this week are simple…get the real NFL refs back. Monday was a travesty of justice, and contrary to the Commissioner, they aren’t getting better. Each week they blow more calls, and the integrity of the game is compromised. Simply ridiculous, and Goodell needs to open his eyes to reality. He NEEDS the true officials, otherwise fans will lose interest, if they haven’t already.”
Jay: “On the HS side it looks like Clearfield and Curwensville both have tough games this week, but I’m going with the home teams to stay undefeated in both. PSU has some guys coming back from injury that hopefully will propel them to a rare road win going forward in the Big 10. The NFL games – those are all just hunches because you never know what’s going to happen there.”
