PENFIELD – The following interpretive programs have been announced for the Parker Dam State Park.
Friday, Sept. 14
Beaver Dam Trail
5 p.m. – Beach House steps
Hike on one of the more popular trails in the park. We will travel through varying habitats and have the opportunity to see diverse wildlife and their sign. Part of the trail follows a historic railroad grade and you may learn a little about the park’s history along the way too. This two-mile loop is along easy terrain, but we please ask that you wear appropriate footwear.
Saturday, Sept. 15
Mushrooms and the Hunt with guest Karen Croyle
2 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
You may notice the tremendous numbers and diversity of fungi that can be seen growing in our yards and forests we explore. Fungi are interesting organisms that play a huge role in most ecosystems, including forests. Come for the discussion about mushrooms, other fungi, and the methods you can use to identify them. Then, take a walk in the park where many types of fungi may be discovered.
Who Will Speak for the Trees?
7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Conservation is a word we often hear, but do we really know what it means? Or more importantly, do we practice it? Learn more about what conservation really is and watch a classic animated video. Although the video is oriented for the children, adults can take a lot from it too. You will see how we all need to be a part of conservation, especially if we value our natural resources.
Sunday, Sept. 16
Crayfish
2 p.m. – Ball Field
Two big claws. A muscular tail. A hard exoskeleton. No, it’s not some sort of monster or alien creature. Learn about crayfish that can be found in many waterways. You will get a chance to find and observe crayfish in Laurel Run, so be prepared to get your feet wet, but please no flip-flops or bare feet.
