Margaret R. Smith, 90, ofClearfielddied Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing andRehabilitationCenter,Clearfield.
She was born Jan. 1, 1922, the daughter of the late Veda McLaughlin Krebs Shaffer and Henry A. Krebs.
Mrs. Smith lived inClearfieldher entire life, attendingThirdWardSchooland Junior High School. She graduated from theClearfieldAreaHigh Schoolin the class of 1939.
Her first job was at McCrory’s 5&10, working there for 10 years at a weekly salary of $9. She left there for a job at Penn Furniture Co. as head office personnel. She retired from there Dec. 24, 1971.
On Jan. 15, 1972, she began working at the Clearfield County Courthouse in the
Prothonotary’s Office as the Deputy Clerk of Courts, a job she held for 15 years. She worked for four Prothonotaries, Archie Hill, Raymond Witherow, Allen Beitz and William Shaw Sr. and also for three Judges, Judge John A. Cherry, Judge John K. Reilly and Judge Joseph Ammerman.
She loved to dance and belonged to many clubs as a social member. She was active with the Clearfield American Legion Post #6, the Clearfield Eagles Club #812, the Clearfield VFW Post #1785, the Clearfield Moose Club #97 and the Clearfield S.O.I. Club #189.
She was a former member of the Swedish American Club in DuBois and a past member of the Junior Women’s Club and the N.O.N. Club inClearfield.
She married Arthur T. Smith on Dec. 25, 1947 inIndiana. They were remarried June 19, 1981 by Father F. Desmond McGee Jr. at the St. Francis Church inClearfield.
She is survived by two sisters, Patricia L. Shaffer of Vanport and Mary E. Covalt ofRochesterand many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur T. Smith on Feb. 18, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Veda A. McLaughlin Krebs Shaffer, her father, Henry A. Krebs and her step-father, Harold Clair Shaffer; two brothers, Henry A. Krebs and James H. Shaffer; and one sister, Nannette Jane Hatt.
AÂ Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Francis Catholic Church ofClearfieldwith Father Brandon Kleckner as celebrant. Burial will be in theCalvaryCemeteryinClearfield.
Friends will be received from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Monday at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home Inc. ofClearfield.
