The independent report conducted by former FBI Director Louis Freeh was released today. Freeh, the former FBI director and federal judge who has led an independent, external investigation into all aspects of the University’s actions related to child abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
In his findings, Freeh noted that Penn State’s top leadership, Graham Spanier, Gary Schultz, Tim Curley and Joe Paterno, showed total disregard for the welfare and well-being of Sandusky’s victims. Freeh’s report also calls out the Board of Trustees for failing to keep then president Spanier in check. It states the board showed “overconfidence” in Spanier’s ability to deal with the situation. It also states that after top leaders testified before a Grand Jury, they failed to recognize the potential risk to the university community and to the university’s reputation.
