CURWENSVILLE – On Thursday, politicians, volunteers, business owners and the general public came together to celebrate the unveiling of the West Branch Susquehanna Byway. The byway runs 72 miles through Clearfield County, and is one of 19 byways in Pennsylvania.
Hildred Rowles, chair of the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority, thanked all present. He stated it was the culmination of four years of work between hoteliers, the CCRTA staff and CCRTA. He began with the history of the project, which began with a tour with PennDOT.
“Historically, the river’s been an economic source for the people of Clearfield County,” said Rowles. He stated that the byway is the next big step in bring the river back to life.
Karen Michael of PennDOT pointed to the attractions and places along the byway. She also pointed out how beautiful the byway is.
“Together, we’ve taken a huge step forward to draw attention to this beautiful river.”
Tammy Weaver, from Sen. Don White’s office, explained the intricacies of getting the law passed to designate the route as a byway. She pointed out that it took not only state government, but also local government efforts and support to make the byway possible.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said County Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen, just prior to unveiling the byway’s official sign.
