KANE – Playing a team twice in the same season is always a good indication of the improvement that has been made, and the Curwensville Area High School softball team made its strides very evident on Monday with a 19-3 win over Kane. The Lady Tide bested Kane 5-1 in their first outing, but left no doubt in the second meeting that they are peeking as the playoffs approach. The win upped the Lady Tide’s record to 11-3, including six in a row.
All nine starters finished the five-inning affair with at least one hit as the squad pelted out 21 hits for the day. Molly Demchak paced the Tide in the clean-up spot with a 5-for-5 day at the plate that included a double and a home run for five RBIs.
“Molly is really seeing the ball well right now and getting the most out of her at-bats,” said Tide head coach Allen Leigey. “We are getting good production from all parts of the line-up.”
To prove Leigey’s point, Curwensville’s number-nine hitter, Abby Johnson, was a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon with four RBIs and a homer.  Taylor Goodman, in the lead-off spot, slapped out three hits with a triple while Catcher Tiffany Carter earned three hits as well, which included a double. Madi Peterman added two hits for the visitors as well.  In all, the first four batters for Curwensville went 13-for-18 against Lady Wolves pitcher Kyla Hoag while the rest of the starting card was 8-for-15 against her. In the first meeting of these teams, Hoag held the Lady Tide to just seven hits total.
“We have stepped up to accept the challenge against everyone we’ve faced lately,” said Leigey. “Right now I think we can hit anyone.”
The Lady Wolves managed just six hits off Tide Hurler Tierra Shope on the day. Shope struck out 10 and walked four while hitting one batter. Kane’s three runs were all earned as they pushed one run across in the third and two in the fifth. Sam Ferranto was 3-for-3 with a double for the Lady Wolves.
The Tide started out slowly in the game with a single run in the first. That slow start opened with a Goodman triple and a two-out, RBI single by Demchak. With 11 batters, six Curwensville runs came home in the second inning featuring Johnson’s homer. Four runs scored in the third with Demchak’s long-ball, two in the fourth, and six more finished things off early in the fifth.
The next pitcher to be crossed off Curwensville’s list is Alex Wright of Brockway. Wright and the Lady Rovers defeated Curwensville in their first meeting 6-2. The Lady Tide is scheduled to travel to Brockway Tuesday afternoon and will host Johnsonburg Wednesday.
