RIDGWAY – The Ridgway Elkers baseball team swept the season series from Curwensville Thursday afternoon in Ridgway with a 12-10 victory over the Golden Tide in a game called after five and a half innings due to darkness.
The Elkers beat the Tide the first time the two teams met on April 4, 9-1, in Curwensville, but this time around the task was tougher thanks to an inspired Tide squad.
Game time was set for 4:15 pm but due to heavy rains and preparing the field, action didn’t begin until approximately 6 pm.
The late start had no effect on the Golden Tide as it quickly put up eight first inning runs thanks to a one out, two run single by Jake Stiles and a two out, bases loaded clearing double by Kyle Bloom.
It looked good for Curwensville, even though the Elkers added two runs in the bottom of the first and trailed 8-2 after one inning.
However, the Elkers would start the comeback to victory with six runs in the bottom of the second inning and would surge ahead for the win in the bottom of the fifth inning with four more.
Curwensville was paced at the plate by Bloom and Boone McGary, each having two hits, with Bloom driving in four teammates.
Ridgway was led by Ben McDonald with four hits, Josh Mitchell with three and Josh Roselli and Zac McKnight collecting two apiece.
Tide head coach Denny Johns spoke about the loss, “It certainly was a tough loss for this team in a game that we let get away from us. But we can’t dwell on today, we need to come back and focus on tomorrow (Friday) against Moshannon Valley.”
Curwensville has won two of three games this week, scoring a total of 43 runs.
Curwensville, now 4-9 on the year, returns to its home field Friday afternoon to play the Black Knights of Moshannon Valley with game time set for 4:15 pm.
