HYDE – One day after turning in its best all-around effort of the season, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team took a big step backward against Tyrone Wednesday at the Bison Sports Complex.
The Golden Eagles capitalized on four Bison errors and eight walks to record a 13-3 victory in five innings for a sweep of the Mountain League Allegheny Division home-and-home series.
“It was just a complete reversal of (Tuesday), and I can’t explain it,” said coach Sid Lansberry, whose Bisons had no errors or walks in their 14-4 win over Bradford.
Seven of Tyrone’s runs were unearned because of the Bison miscues.
Four of the Golden Eagles who received free passes came around to score.
The other walks pushed runners into scoring position or prolonged innings for loser Kyler Kephart and reliever Tanner Ogden.
Tyrone (8-8) built a 7-0 lead for starter and winner Jordan Miller before Clearfield broke through against the sophomore left-hander, who might have been affected by a 30-minute delay in the middle of the fourth inning because of lightning.
After Coleman Kubala’s grounder was booted and Wyatt Westen singled to left field with one out, Miller walked Jonas Kochan and Kephart to force in a run.
One out later, Tanner Ogden drilled a double to the fence in left for two RBIs, but a strong relay throw from shortstop Jake Belinda beat Kephart to the plate for the third out.
The Golden Eagles then made it a Mercy Rule win with a six-run salvo off Ogden and Thomas Summers in the fifth, cashing three walks with bases-loaded singles by Belinda, Matt Hample and Kaden Hunter and a two-run single by Brad Wirtner. Only one of the tallies was earned.
Reliever J.D. Dorminy retired the Bisons in order in the lower fifth.
Clearfield mustered only four hits off Miller, who struck out six, including five the first time through the order, and walked five.
“He’s a good pitcher, but we gave away too many runs,” Lansberry said.
A two-out misplay gave Tyrone a second run in the first frame after Belinda had doubled to deep left center and scored on Joe Gearhart’s sharp single through the box.
Gearhart was credited with two more RBIs in the second inning but lost a hit when his bases-loaded liner to center was short-hopped by Ogden, who fired to second for a forceout.
Miller led off the Tyrone fourth by legging out a grounder to short and then raced the rest away around the sacks on Markus Wagner’s opposite-field double to deep left. The second of Belinda’s three hits and two walks made it 6-0. An off-target throw on a pickoff try by the Bisons gave the Golden Eagles their seventh run.
Clearfield came to life in the lower fourth but couldn’t prevent Tyrone from padding its lead to 10 runs in the fifth.
“We just didn’t play well,” Lansberry said. “You can’t beat anybody when you play like that.”
The Bisons, 1-6 in the division and 4-10 overall, concludes their three-game homestand for the week against Philipsburg-Osceola Friday.
