KANE – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team broke a three game losing streak with a 14-3 pounding of the Kane Wolves Monday afternoon.
The game was called after five innings of play due to the ten run mercy rule and the win gives the Tide a 3-8 mark on the 2012 season.
Curwensville never trailed in the contest after gaining a 2-0 edge in the top half of the first inning.
Kane would score one run in the bottom of the first to come as close as they would get the rest of the game.
Then the roof fell in on the Wolves.
The Tide had its biggest inning of the year when they scored 10 runs in the top half of the third to put the contest out of reach.
Freshman Jake Stiles and Kyle Bloom each had two out, 2-run singles in the third to fuel the Curwensville offense.
The Wolves committed five errors on the day as the Tide score 12 unearned runs against two Kane pitchers.
Tanner Elensky and Kyle Bloom each had two hits for Curwensville.
Neither team had an extra base hit.
Sophomore Kyle Johns picked up his second win of the year in going three strong innings, allowing just one run and one hit.
Tide head coach Denny Johns remarked afterwards, “It is a relief to get back in the win column after losing three straight. We do have a busy week coming up, so hopefully we can keep this momentum going.”
Then Johns added, “We did have a couple of clutch hits this afternoon as Jake (Stiles) and Kyle (Bloom) each had those singles with two outs in the third inning that each drove in two runs. And I was pleased with both of our pitchers as Kyle (Johns) and Ricky (Magnuson) both threw strikes, which made it easier for us.”
Curwensville is on the road again Tuesday, traveling to Westover to battle the Owls of Harmony. Game time is 4 pm.
