FLINTON – Monday’s warm weather seemed to be just the key to heat up the Curwensville Area High School softball team as the offense rattled out 12 hits and pitcher Tierra Shope hurled a no-hitter to down Glendale 11-0 in Moshannon Valley League action.
Shope and the Lady Tide allowed only four Lady Vikings to reach base in the contest.  Two walks and two defensive errors were the Tide’s only blemishes on the afternoon. Shope fanned eight on the day to aid the first no-no of her sophomore season.
“Tierra still didn’t have her best stuff – I’ve seen her better,” said head coach Allen Leigey. “It was her best outing of the year, and she pitched well and kept her fast ball around the plate.”
The bats came to life as well for Curwensville as eight of nine starters hit safely in the game. Senior Molly Demchak led the hit parade with a 3-for-4 day at the plate including a double. Taylor Goodman and Tiffany Carter slapped out two hits each. Carter, Madi Peterman and Sarah Wriglesworth all doubled in the game. Wriglesworth drove in three runs for the day while Abby Johnson plated two runners with a single in the third inning.
” I thought we hit the ball well, and it shows that repetition pays off,” stated Leigey. “That’s all we did at practice on Saturday, and I was very pleased with the results.”
The Lady Tide opened the game by loading the bases on three straight walks. However, Glendale was able to record two outs before Wrglesworth’s double set the score at 2-0 after the first inning.
The third inning opened with a trio of hits from Carter, Demchak and Cheyenne Pentz. A Viking error and hits from Johnson, Hannah Bressler and Goodman helped plate six more runs for the visitors to push the score to 8-0.
Curwensville ended the game early in the fifth as Goodman walked, Carter and Peterman laced back-to-back doubles and Demchak finished the scoring with an RBI single.
“I told the girls in that fifth inning we needed to end it here to help save Tierra’s arm for tomorrow’s game,” said Leigey. “They went out and got the job down. As a matter of fact, they were very business-like from the get-go. Other than the two errors, we came to do what needed to be done and didn’t stoop down. We need to have that frame of mind every game.”
The Lady Tide (4-1) will be back on the road Tuesday at Johnsonburg.
