PHILIPSBURG – It was a case of too little, too late for the Clearfield Area High School baseball team once again Friday afternoon as Philipsburg-Osceola rolled up an 11-0 lead and outlasted the Bisons for a 12-8 win.
After being held hitless through four innings by Mark Curtis, the Bisons scored all of their runs off reliever Tanner Lamb in the fifth frame of the Mountain League Allegheny Division game.
Matt Josephson and Jonas Kochan received walks and Christian Flood singled to fill the sacks and start the merry-go-round.
Then, Michael Wood walked to force in the first Bison run, and Cole Kephart singled home another.
Following a Mountie error that gave Clearfield (2-6, 1-3 ML-Allegheny) its third marker, Tanner Ogden singled and Ronny Ogden drew a free pass to make it 11-5, prompting another P-O pitching change.
Coleman Kubala greeted Josh Dotts with an RBI-single and Jon Janocko came through with a two-run single, but Dotts retired the next three batters.
Parker Watson kept the Bisons off the board in the last two innings to save the win for Curtis.
The Bisons wound up with seven hits, including a double by losing hurler Kyler Kephart.
Philipsburg-Osceola (5-3) cracked 13 hits off Kephart and two relievers.
Curtis led the way with three singles, Mike Marcinko pounded two triples and drove in two runs, Watson singled and doubled and Matt Carpin doubled for two RBIs.
Freshman left-hander Thomas Summers made his first appearance on the mound for the Bisons and gave up only one earned run over 4-2/3 innnings. He struck out three and allowed five hits, two walks and three runs.
In the junior varsity game, Clearfield (4-3) made it four victories in a row, 14-5, with Sawyer Rowles collecting three hits, Josh Kennedy adding two hits and driving in two runs and Josh Sorbera scoring three times. Nate Brady was the winning pitcher.
Clearfield will welcome Central Mountain to the Bison Sports Complex Monday in another ML-Allegheny game.
