MEN’S GYMNASTICS
UNIVERSITY PARK – Junior still rings specialist Scott Rosenthal of Clearfield topped the 16.000 plateau for the fifth time this year to help No.2-ranked Penn State treat the Senior Night crowd to another record-breaking performance in Rec Hall Saturday.
Rosenthal, ranked No. 1 in the nation by GymInfo since Jan. 23, received a 16.100 score for his seventh rings title of the season as the Nittany Lions set a program standard with a 360.600 in a non-conference win over No. 10 Temple, which totaled 342.200.
Penn State’s score bested the 360.550 posted by the 2008 team and replaced its previous week’s 359.500 against No. 6 Minnesota as the highest score in the nation this season.
Rosenthal keyed a Nittany Lion sweep on the rings with the meet-high 16.100 score. Miguel Pineda (15.500) took second, followed by Nestor Rodriguez (15.200) and Parker Raque (15.100).
The Nittany Lions swept all six events, and Felix Aronovich was a doublewinner, setting a career high with a 15.300 on the high bars and matching his previous best with a 15.400 on the parallel bars en route to the all-around title (89.100). He was rewarded by sharing Big Ten Conference Gymnast of the Week honors.
Nittany Lion Craig Hernandez was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the week after breaking the program’s pommel horse record second time this year with a 15.700, the second highest score in the nation this year.

SOFTBALL
CLARION – Freshman walk-on left fielder Sara Clark of Curwensville stroked hits in all four of Clarion’s games last week to hike her batting average to .327.
She came through with a clutch single, her second of the game, that drove in the tying run when the Lady Eagles rallied in the seventh inning to nip Edinboro 4-3 Wednesday.
Clarion (6-6) lost the nightcap 5-2 and then was swept 4-1 and 5-3 by Seton Hill at Greensburg Thursday.
In the opener, Clark walked and scored the lone run and later doubled.
She is 12-for-37 with hits in nine of 11 games, including three doubles and one triple, and six RBIs.

WILLIAMSPORT – Junior pitcher-outfielder Holly Lansberry of Curwensville collected four hits but was tagged with two of Lycoming’s four setbacks last week.
She singled and scored in the first inning and singled across another run in the second frame to give the Lady Warriors a 2-0 lead in their Commonwealth Conference opener at the Shangraw Sports Complex Thursday, but Elizabethtown rallied in the late innings to pull out a 3-2 squeaker.
Lansberry started the nightcap in the circle and gave up six hits and two runs before being relieved in the fourth inning with Lycoming (5-7) trailing 2-1. Elizabethtown added three runs in the fifth for a 5-2 win.
She suffered the loss in the second game of Misericordia’s 7-3 and 7-4 sweep of the Lady Warriors at Dallas, Pa, Sunday, pitching six innings and surrendering 10 hits and six earned runs.
Lansberry’s (2-4) has a 5.57 earned run average for a team-high 32.1 innings in six appearances. She has 25 strikeouts and 17 walks while allowing 49 hits and 28 runs, 20 of them earned.
At the plate, Lansberry is 8-for-34, a .235 average, with one double and three RBIs.

BASEBALL
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman shortstop Derek Danver of Clearfield raised his batting average 28 points to .298 with five hits in Penn State Altoona’s four games last week.
The Lions were beaten 8-1 and 6-3 by St. Vincent at Greensburg on Monday, March 20, and split their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference openers against Medaille at Buffalo, N.Y., Friday, eking out a 2-1 win before bowing 4-3 for a 3-12 record.
Danver, who singled for an RBI and doubled in the nightcap at St. Vincent, leads the Lions in runs batted in with 10 and shares the team lead in doubles with four.
He is 14-for-47 and has scored four runs.

BRADFORD – Sophomore pitcher-outfielder Sam Gardner of Curwensville made the most of his first start with the first hit and the first stolen base of his career for Pitt-Bradford (4-12) in a 6-4 victory over Juniata at Huntingdon Thursday.
Gardner, who is 1-for-4 in eight games, has four appearances on the mound, working 3.2 innings and giving up six hits and five runs with four strikeouts and three walks.

ERIE – Junior Mike Moyer of Clearfield made his first relief appearance for Penn State Behrend (9-6) in Thursday’s 9-1 non-conference victory over visiting Fredonia (N.Y.) State Thursday.
The right-hander, who has won all three of his starts, gave up five hits and one run in his three-inning stint. He had one strikeout and one walk.
Starter Dante DeSantis of DuBois went five shutout innings for his second victory, fanning seven and yielding only two hits and one walk.
Moyer leads the Lions in wins, is second in innings pitched (20.2) and is third in earned run average (2.18).
He has allowed 18 hits and six runs, five earned, while striking out 14 and walking six.
