National Quilt Day will be celebrated at Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library Saturday with an event sponsored by the Clearfield Classic Quilters Guild. Guild members will have locally crafted quilting projects on display from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Those interested in quilting, finding a new hobby or the general public is invited to view the display, including bed and lap quilts, table runners, wall hangings and many other items. In addition to the displays, guild members will be present to demonstrate hand quilting, rotary cutting, paper piecing and a project called the “20-minute table runner.”
“The library is pleased to have the quilt show held here for the first time,” said Paula Collins, library director. Library staff will have quilting books on display and available for checkout during the event.
Quilting, the stitching together of layers of padding and fabric, may date back as far as ancient Egypt. In Europe, quilting appears to have been introduced by Crusaders in the 12th century. In America, quilt making was common in the late 18th century and early years of the 19th century. Most women were busy spinning, weaving and sewing in order to clothe their family. Quilting is enjoying a renewal as modern-day quilters revel in the latest equipment and beautiful fabrics to create quilts ranging from the warm and practical to exquisite works of art.
The community is encouraged to stop by the library on Saturday during show hours to view the works of art on display and learn a few tricks in quilting. Additional information may be obtained by calling the Shaw Public Library at 814-765-3271 during regular business hours.
