HERSHEY — Clearfield Area High School junior Christian Stone was knocked out of the PIAA state wrestling championships on Friday afternoon one win short of the medal stand.
Stone, NW-3, who finished the year at 28-8, was beaten 10-0 by Tyler Smith (36-3), SW-2, from Franklin Regional. Smith will compete in the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning and can still finish as high as third place.
Smith was beaten in the quarterfinals by the Northwest Region champion, Godwin Nyama (36-2) of Brasher 7-1.
Stone opened the tournament on Thursday with a tough 4-2 loss to Cortland Schuyler of Manheim Township 4-2, then received a forfeit in the first round of consolations to set up his match with Smith.
The only District 9 AAA wrestler to bring home a state medal will be DuBois’ 170-pounder Geno Morelli (34-5). Morelli lost his tourney opener and has picked up two consolation wins. All three Northwest region representatives at 170 will bring home PIAA medals at the conclusion of Saturday’s festivities.
The semifinals and third round of consolations are set for 9:00 am, with the fourth round of consies to immediately follow.
The Parade of Champions is scheduled for 6:45 pm with the championship finals and all the medal matches to begin at 7:00 pm. The finals can be seen live on PCN.
