HERSHEY — Despite being beaten the only time he got to step on the mat at the Giant Center, Clearfield’s 120-pounder Christian Stone has made it to the second day of competition.
Stone (27-7) was dealt a first round loss, 4-2, by the South Central Region champion, Cortland Schuyer (37-4) of Manheim Township. Schuyer scored the opening takedown of the bout and led 2-0 going into the second period. Down to start the second, Schuyer reversed for a 4-0 lead. Stone promptly reversed to close the gap to two once again. Stone was then ridden the final two minutes to close out the match at 4-2.
Stone then received a forfeit in the first round of consolations and will await a quarterfinal loser to see who his opponent is in the second round of consolations at 3:15 on Friday afternoon. Stone will face the loser of the Tyler Smith, SW-2, (35-2) and Godwin Nyama, NW-1, (35-2) match up.
A win there would assure Stone, a junior in his third trip to the PIAA championships, his first state medal.
Out of six District 9 entries, DuBois’ Landon Hanna (33-2) at 195 was the only one to pick up a first round win.
