Campus Corner: Rosenthal Named Big 10 Gymnast of Week Again

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Scott Rosenthal of Clearfield was named Big 10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season and the third time in his career after earning a 16.100 score on the still rings as No. 2-ranked Penn State defeated No. 7 Ohio State 355.5000-347.200 in St. John Arena Saturday evening.

The nation’s top-ranked rings performer was one of three individual winners for the Nittany Lions, who swept all six events in the Big 10 Conference meet to record their high score of the season that also is tops in the Big Ten and the highest road total in the NCAA.

With Rosenthal going over 16.000 for the fourth time in chalking up his fifth title of the season, Penn State’s No. 1 rings team just missed tying its season high with a 60.850. Miguel Pineda (15.050) and Nihir Kothari (14.950) made it a sweep of the top three spots for the Nittany Lions. Parker Raque and Felix Aronovich tied Ohio State’s Phil Onorato for fourth with 14.750s.

According to GymInfo, the NCAA’s second highest rings score behind Rosenthal is a 15.800 by Kothari.

Nittany Lion freshman Tristan Duverglas received Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for his 15.25 in vaulting.

Penn State is 4-1 with a 2-1 Big Ten record.

BASEBALL

NEW MARKET, Va. – Sophomore pitcher-outfielder Sam Gardner of Curwensville walked and scored in the nightcap of Pitt-Bradford’s season-opening double-header with Dickinson at Rebel Park Sunday.

The Panthers dropped both games, 12-11 and 13-4.

Last year, Gardner appeared in four games, walking twice in four at-bats.

The 5-10, 175-pounder went to the mound twice in the Panthers‘ annual Spring Trip to Arizona, pitching four innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

He hit one batter and gave up seven hits and eight runs, six of which were earned.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

NEW WILMINGTON – Junior guard Matt Shiner of Clearfield finished with 45 points and 14 rebounds in 13 games for Westminster.

Shiner, who started six games, also had 10 assists and six steals for the Titans, who wound up eighth in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference at 4-12 and 6-20 overall after losing 63-57 to Waynesburg in the PAC play-in game.

FOOTBALL

PITTSBURGH – Junior offensive lineman Nick Redden of Clearfield made the Duquesne Director of Athletics’ Honor Roll for the 2011 fall semester.

The Athletic Training major earned a 3.38 grade-point average for the semester.
