Earlier this season, at Harmony, the Owls defeated the Golden Tide 40-28.
Not this time though, as the Tide put together a strong second half, unlike the first game when they scored only 10 points in the second 16 minutes, outscoring Harmony 35-28.
Curwensville fell behind 12-8 after the first eight minutes with Tanner Elensky of the Tide keeping his squad somewhat close by scoring six first period points.
Brett Gardner put the Golden Tide in front, 14-12, with 4:40 remaining in the second frame, hitting on one of his three pointers on the evening. Gardner and Elensky would lead all scorers on the night, each dumping in 17 points.
The Tide would stretch the margin to 20-12 by going on a 12-0 run until eight seconds remained in the second period before Evan Novella of the Owls hit a free throw followed by a field goal by sophomore Kamden Kruise cutting the Curwensville squad’s lead to 20-15 at the break.
With the Tide up 24-15 in the third quarter Logan Sral took over for the Harmony offense as the freshman poured in 11 points to keep the Owls within striking distance. Sral had three treys in the third stanza and at one point pulled the Owls to within two, 24-22, thanks to a three, with 4:43 left in the third.
Gardner would then hit a three at the other end putting the Tide back out in front 27-22 which helped Curwensville take a nine point margin into the final eight minutes, 37-28.
Curwensville would also win the fourth period, 18-15, in spite of 11 points from Owl Tyler Tiesi as the Golden Tide improved to 2-14 on the 2011-12 campaign.
The Owls record now stands at 2-18.
Kyle Johns also helped the Tide offense with 10 points while Sral, off of the bench, paced Harmony with 13 followed by Tiesi with 12.
Tide head coach Shane Pentz liked the offensive output by his team, “We are capable of having this kind of offensive scoring at times. We just need to be more consistent because we did come out a little listless in the first quarter. But with one to two minutes left in the first we flipped a switch on and played hard the rest of the night.”
Then Pentz added, “We are trying to use these last six games as a springboard for next season because we will have everyone back.”
The junior varsity game was won by the Owls by beating the young Golden Tide 35-23.
Curwensville makes the long trip to Sheffield on Tuesday to match up with the Wolverines with the junior varsity game starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
