That really wasn’t the case Wednesday night at Patton Hall in Curwensville as the Glendale Vikings took care of the Golden Tide 69-32 to pick up win number 10 for the Vikings against seven defeats.
Glendale won the first time the two teams tangled at Glendale on December 30 by a score of 62-29.
Pentz talked about what his team lacked on this particular night, “We just seemed to back off and played very passive tonight. We let Glendale dictate what they wanted to do and they took it to us in the third quarter. They (Glendale) can score the ball and our biggest issue was our defense which let us down tonight.”
Curwensville started out the evening taking at 7-6 lead about midway through the first quarter only to have Glendale close out the opening frame with a 10-0 run.
The second quarter was the best of the game for Curwensville as the Vikings managed to come up with a 14-10 margin to lead at the half 30-17.
Brett Gardner kept Curwensville close in the first 16 minutes as the Tide sophomore guard had 10 at the intermission.
For Glendale it was Dakota Sinclair with 12 first half points that fueled the Vikings attack, which ended up having three players hit for double figures. Sinclair had his 12, while Michael Wigfield poured in14 and Damon Braniff added 13.
Right after the halftime break Glendale displayed the muscle that Viking first year head coach Mark Yeckley had been waiting for as his squad put up 23 points while limiting the Tide to eight to take a more than commanding 53-25 margin into the final eight minutes.
The Vikings started the third period with an 8-0 run before Gardner hit one of his four three-pointers on the evening with 6:02 remaining in the period.
Gardner had his best game offensively of the year as he hit for a game high 19 points.
Both squads cleared the bench for the final period with the Vikings continuing to dominate Curwensville, outscoring the Tide 16-7 to win with ease.
Pentz closed with, “We still need to work on the little things, like passing and rebounding. And we certainly need to be more aggressive out there.”
In the junior varsity game it was also the Vikings prevailing over Curwensville, 46-23.
The Tide, now 1-13, will host the Rams of Johnsonburg on Friday with the JV game starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
Johnsonburg won the first meeting on its home court earlier this season 60-23.
