DUBOIS – Despite inclement weather, the Second Annual “Pink Game” between the DuBois Area High School and Brockway Area High School girls’ basketball teams on Jan. 19 was a huge success.
The “Pink Game” benefits the Hahne Regional Cancer Center in DuBois. The two teams raised $14,200 for the cause this year. Last year’s inaugural event at Brockway raised $10,500.
Money was raised through a fund-raising drive that included the sale of $5 raffle tickets for prizes such as a Pirate luxury box and a signed Andrew McCutcheon jersey, a 32-inch flat screen television, an HP printer, two free lunches at Red Lobster each month for a year and an in-ground basketball system. Other fund-raisers at the game included a 50/50, a halftime shooting contest, and a Chinese auction for numerous gift baskets which were donated by businesses and individuals from the DuBois and Brockway communities.
The fund-raising drive actually began in the fall with the with the “Pink Night Kickoff” football game against Meadville. Approximately $5,000 was raised from the sale of cancer awareness t-shirts, chances on an official NFL “Pink” game ball and other items.
At Thursday night’s game, special cancer survivor guest were recognized before the varsity contest as members of both teams chose a survivor to acknowledge. Those recognized included Pat Battarori, Carole Lewis, George Brosky, John Town, Zachary Lindenmuth, Tricia Clark, Lisa LaBrasca, Betty Robbins, Marlene Miknis, Donna Clyde, Jess Perry, Heidi Kunselman, Karla Strausser, Cory Hand, Jessica Santiso, Tessa Hiles, Dan Webster, Galon Conrad, Aimee Carlson, Lance Benton and Barry DeSalve.
Following the game, which DuBois won 52-37, the Chinese auction and raffle ticket winners were announced. The “Pink Ball” was passed on to Brockway which will host next year’s game and the grand total amount raised was announced with a check for $14,200 being presented to the Hahne Regional Cancer Center.
In his closing remarks, DASD Superintendent Tim Deluccia recognized the fund-raising effort by both teams and thanked everyone for attending.
DAHS head coach Sam Kirk also had members of his team present booster club president Denise Sloan with flowers and signed pink ball for efforts in organizing this year’s event.
