HYDE – The Curwensville Area High School wrestling team entered Saturday’s Clearfield Duals at .500 but wound up in a very tough pool bracket and lost to a quartet of opponents who brought once-beaten records into Weiss Gym.
The Golden Tide was beaten 64-12 by Pleasant Valley, 52-23 by Ridgway, 52-24 by Valley and 55-21 by Sharpsville.
Combined, those four squads were 28-4 before Saturday, and three went on to win their place matches. Pleasant Valley, which placed fifth in the season-opening Reno (Nev.) Tournament of Champions, emerged as champion with a 47-18 win over General McLane and now owns a 13-1 record.
Ridgway (14-3) defeated Clearfield 48-27 for fifth place and Valley (11-4) edged Port Allegany 36-34 for seventh, while Sharpsville (15-3) lost to Peters Township 44-24 with third place at stake.
Because of injuries, Curwensville was shorthanded for the ninth-place match against Montoursville and came out on the short end of a 33-27 verdict.
“We experienced quality competition,” Golden Tide coach Duane Wriglesworth said. “Some of our athletes were able to rebound from some tough losses, and some were able to come from behind and secure wins.
“Jake Keller stood out by achieving three falls and a technical fall.”
However, the Golden Tide senior 138-pounder suffered his first setback of the season when Montoursville’s David Batkowski (21-1) staved off his comeback bid to hold on for an 8-7 victory.
Batkowski, who placed sixth at 130 pounds in last year’s PIAA Class AA Championships, was handed his only loss, 4-2, by undefeated 145-pounder Kyle Barnes of Hughesville in the Top Hat Tournament.
According to Wriglesworth, Batkowski used up all of his injury time during two timeouts and had to fight off several takedown attempts by Keller in the third period.
Batkowski hit two sweep singles for first-period takedowns and a lead he never relinquished, adding another takedown in the third period.
Wriglesworth noted Keller (17-1) worked a takedown in the middle period but was unable to turn Batkowski. All of the Golden Tide standout’s other points were escapes.
“I was glad to see Jake build momentum as the match wore on,” Wriglesworth said.
Curwensville (5-10) will be on the road again this week for a dual meet at Brookville Thursday and the Fred Bell Memorial Tournament at Grove City Friday and Saturday.
