For the Mounties under head coach Tim McCamley it was win number eight on the year against just two losses.
The Bisons, on the other end of the spectrum, are still searching for win number one against seven defeats in a very un-Bison like wrestling season.
Dylan Graham, at 132, started the night off well for Clearfield with a 15-1 major decision over Joseph Bainey that gave the Bison a short lived 4-0 team lead.
At 138 Andrew Greenawalt of the Mounties picked up his 15th victory of the year with a fall in 3:50 over Kody Mayhew that gave Philipsburg-Osceola a two point edge, 6-4.
The Bisons would regain the lead for the final time at 145 pounds when Nolan Barger of Clearfield pinned once beaten Jared Smith of Philipsburg-Osceola in the featured bout of the evening. Barger had a 5-0 margin over Smith before the fall came in the third period at the 4:37 mark. Barger is now 17-3 and Smith 18-2.
With Clearfield leading 10-6 the visiting Mounties would win the next six bouts, including a forfeit at 195, to bolt out in front 39-10. Of those six bouts four would end with falls.
Logan Walstrom pinned Michael Beck of Clearfield in 3:19 at 152 followed by Jeff Thompson pinning Kody Hepfer of the Bisons in 1:14 at 160 pounds. It was win number 21 for Walstrom against just one defeat while Thompson improved to 16-6.
John Prentice, at 170 for the Mounties, jumped out to 10-3 lead over Clearfield senior Garrett Timko before Timko scored six straight third period points to make it very interesting at 10-9 before Prentice would pick up a late escape to secure a hard fought 11-9 win.
At 182 Dennis Lumadue wasted little time in pinning Devin Sinclair of Clearfield in 1:51 making the score 27-10 in favor of the Mounties.
After the Clearfield forfeit at 195, action moved to 220 were Nick Gray of Philipsburg-Osceola made quick work of Shane Billings pinning the Bison in just 1:23.
Clearfield would finally stop the Mountie run at 285 when Jordan Lancaster picked up a takedown, a three point near fall and two escapes on his way to a 7-5 win over Tim Dombrowski.
With the victory well in hand the match went to the lightweights where at 106 undefeated Mountie Chris Thompson earned a tough 4-0 decision over a very scrappy Noah Cline. Thompson used a first period takedown and a second period reversal to up his perfect record to 22-0.
Clearfield would forfeit for the second time on the evening, this time at 113, before Philipsburg-Osceola would get it’s final win at 120 when Brian Evans picked up a 3-1 decision over Bison senior Frankie Aveni.
Christian Stone of Clearfield would end the night with a 4:40 pin over Caleb Shively at 126 making the final score 51-19 in favor of the Mounties.
Clearfield coach Jeff Aveni summed up the evenings activities, “I felt we did a lot of things right that we have been working very hard on. We stayed in a lot of matches longer and battled harder more than we have done for awhile and I was real pleased with that aspect. We didn’t roll over tonight and that’s a credit to our kids against a very good Philipsburg-Osceola team.”
Aveni finished with, “We have faced a very brutal schedule to this point which is basically a District 6 schedule against a lot of solid teams. But we have some good matches left and just need to continue to work hard and get ready for the post-season.”
Clearfield is back in action at home on Saturday when they host the “Bison Duals” featuring a total of 10 teams including the Curwensville Golden Tide. Action starts at 9 am at the Clearfield Area High School.
In the junior high match prior to the varsity tilt it was Clearfield trumping Philipsburg-Osceola 69-27
