BELL TOWNSHIP – A Warrendale company is facing a fine from the EPA for a failed injection well.
According to the EPA, EXCO Resources violated the terms of its Underground Injection Control Permit and the Safe Water Drinking Act by ceasing to injection brine into a disposal injection well after discovering that the well had failed mechanical integrity. The EPA stated that the company utilized the well at a pressure exceeding its permitted maximum injection pressure for a three month period in 2010. EXCO is also accused of not notifying the EPA with proper notification of a mechanical integrity failure.
EXCO was ordered to property repair the Irvin Well and demonstrate the mechanical integrity of the well, as well as pay a fine of $159,624.
The EPA noted that “the penalty is based on the gravity of the violations and on avoided expenses associated with the continued injection of brine during the period of failed mechanical integrity. There was no documented contamination to underground sources of drinking water.”
