In pretty much of a repeat of Friday’s loss to Glendale, the Lady Tide let the first eight minutes get away from them as the Lady Rovers, now 2-1, took a 22-9 lead into the second quarter.
Senior Sara Guilyard paved the way with eight first quarter points with Julie Vokes, a junior, chipping in with six to help Brockway get off to a fast start. Vokes led all scores on the evening with a game high 22 points. Guilyard also had double figures for the Lady Rovers with 13.
Lady Tide coach Rusty McCracken spoke afterwards about the problems plaguing his team early in the season, “Unfortunately we have had a hard time scoring even though we made some shots tonight that we didn’t make in the first game. We were out hustled a lot of the time and once again turnovers and ball handling were and our concerns.”
With the Lady Tide down 37-21 at the intermission the visitors needed to come out and become offensive minded in the final sixteen minutes. It wasn’t to be however as Curwensville would only score seven points in each of the last two quarters.
The Strickland sisters led the Tide offense with Ciara, a freshman scoring 15, and Savannah, a senior, adding 11.
McCracken added, “ Sometimes, for whatever reason, we just get lackadaisical out there, especially in handling the ball. Of course we certainly have lots of room to improve but it is early in the season and we just have to work harder. We need to develop some confidence in playing defense which should help all around.”
Unofficially there were a total of 41 fouls called on both squads with the Lady Tide shooting only 11 of 27 from the free throw line while Brockway was 10 of 16.
In junior varsity action it was Brockway coming away with the win over the Lady Tide youngsters 29-20.
The Lady Tide, 0-2, return to the hardwood on Friday when they host Ridgway in a battle with the Lady Elkers. The JV contest starts at 6 pm with the varsity tilt to immediately follow.
