Anti-Roosting Measures Reduce Hazards to Pedestrians
HARRISBURG – The Department of General Services will begin its 14th annual crow dispersal program on today to help ensure the safety of pedestrians on the grounds of the Capitol Complex.
Capitol Police will discharge caps or blanks and whistling devices to deter crows from roosting. The measures will be repeated each evening from approximately 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., as needed, in the coming weeks.
The anti-roosting program, developed in consultation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is not harmful to people, crows, other animals or the environment, DGS Secretary Sheri Phillips said.
Such measures help to maintain pedestrian safety by reducing the amount of crow waste that can present a slipping hazard, especially in wet weather. The program must be conducted annually to reinforce its effectiveness.
