Maxwell M. Smith, 97 of Frenchville died Friday at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 26, 1914 in Girard Township, a son of the late J. Paul and Caroline (Jury) Smith.
Mr. Smith was employed as a heavy equipment operator for many years. He was a member of the Congress Hill United Methodist Church, LeContes Mills, and previously served on the Clearfield Area School Board.
He enjoyed spending time at the ‘Smith’ Camp and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Being born during the early years of aviation, he took particular interest in flying and learning about aircraft. He was a member of Clearfield’s model airplane club, the FREQUENT-C-FLYERS. He was also interested in astronomy, belonging to a local astronomy club and even has a star named after him.
Above all, he will be missed by his family to whom he was very devoted.
He is survived by a daughter, Janice Zimmerman and her husband, Jim of Clearfield; two grandsons, Joshua Zimmerman and his wife, Leslie of Seattle, WA and Jared Zimmerman and his wife, Shea of Saint Joseph, MO; and a great-grandson, Maxwell R. Zimmerman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel (Leigey) Smith on March 19, 1981 and whom he married April 29, 1936 in Cumberland, MD; an infant sister, Edith Smith and a sister and brother, Pauline Amon and Lewis Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, with Pastor Susan Arnold and the Rev. Kenneth J. Leonard officiating. Interment will be in the Gillingham Cemetery, Frenchville.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
