The Last Word
Jay: “Well, I have to basically “eat crow” for just about all of my ‘Last Word’ comments here last week. I won’t re-hash them at this time. On to this week…I think Clearfield and Curwensville bounce back after tough losses last week. Local D6 teams are making their playoff push now – unfortunately, WB and Glendale run into difficult road tests this week. P-O, which sits atop the D6 AA rankings, has a classic trap game this week on the road also. I’m picking them , but they better be careful.”
Dave: “Big tests for almost all the local teams – Clearfield has the long road trip (thankfully a one-time deal due to Mifflin County’s merger), Curwensville faces a rejuvenated Ridgway squad, and P-O gets its first road test as the D-6 favorite. I like Clearfield and P-O’s chances, but I think Curwensville will struggle again. Penn State’s creampuff schedule will have them at 6-1 after this week, but the real tests for them are upcoming – they deserve credit, though, for finally knocking off their Iowa nemesis.”
Dustin: “With the beating we all took last week, I’m gonna focus on my alma mater in my last word. I was at the game last week against Iowa, and despite choosing PSU to win (only one to do so), I got to see first-hand that in order for them to have any chance of having a victory, Penn State needs McGloin at quarterback. Bolden was less than impressive, and despite McGloin throwing the red-zone interception, he had more effective throws and managed the offense a lot better in my opinion. No. 11 is better than No. 1 in this case, and I know many more fans agree with that statement.”
Rusty: “Oh, thanks guys! All high school and college this week? Haven’t I missed enough picks for you yet?! Sure, give me some pro games and I can say, “Hey they’ve had the top pick for 12 years now, they should win.” But this is tough. You have to figure in emotion and Homecoming and Senior Night, wow. OK, I’ll go down with the ship. I really wanted to pick the Warriors this week, but it’s too close to call and the home field advantage is big. P-O should have little trouble in their road game. I have to go with Penn State this week, hopefully the defense is up to the task again. I don’t really know what to expect from Pitt, why didn’t we pick the Rutgers’ game. Maybe I’ll go off chart and say watch out for the Sheffield upset over Port Allegany – why not.”
Chris: “At 4-6, last week was truly humbling. Like the Bisons, I’ll try to bounce back this week. Expect most of the local high school teams to fare well (sorry Glendale). Penn State’s offense is awful, at least when Rob Bolden is behind center. Nonetheless, Matt McGloin will make enough plays to lead PSU past Purdue. Pitt will also take care of business at home against the Utes.”
