Multiple sporting events are set to take place on Penn State’s New Kensington campus this weekend.
— Women’s volleyball opens its season at noon, Saturday, Sept. 10, in a nonconference match against Southern State (Ohio) Community College in the campus Athletics Center. Second-year head coach Dave McGeary returns five starters from last year’s 2-14 team.
— An hour later, the men’s soccer team will take on Penn State Worthington Scranton in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) match at the New Kensington soccer field. A year ago, coach Jack Adams led the New Kensington Lions to 7-4 PSUAC record and a berth in the conference finals. His efforts garnered Coach of the Year honors from the conference.
— The golf team will travel to Penn National Golf Course on Thursday, Sept. 15, for a 10:30 a.m. PSUAC match against the six-team West division in Fayetteville, Pa. Coach Bill Woodard’s squad is coming off a 329-387 opening day victory Sept. 2 over Penn State Shenango at Tam O’Shanter Golf Club in Hermitage, Pa. Sophomore Alex Baker shot his collegiate career-low, 77, to earn medalist honors, two shots clear of teammate Cody Dinger, who was runner-up at 79. The weather forced the postponement of the New Kensington Lions’ second match Sept. 7 at Mystic Rock Golf Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. The match has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3.
Penn State New Kensington competes in the PSUAC and the USCAA. The PSUAC comprises 15 teams from Penn State campuses across the state. The USCAA is a national organization that is geared to provide athletic opportunities to small colleges — those with enrollments of less than 1,500. Established in 2001, the USCAA was incorporated to provide an opportunity for members to compete on an equal level of competition with schools of similar size and athletic programs. Headquartered in Newport News, Va., the organization has more than 50 member institutions in 24 states, stretching from Maine to California. New Kensington joined the USCAA in 2005.
