TYRONE – On Wednesday in Tyrone, representatives from PennDOT, five county DUI Task Forces and the Pennsylvania State Police came together for a press conference to remind motorists to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
The effort is part of a nationwide crack-down of impaired drivers over the Labor Day Holiday made possible with $4.2 million in funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. PennDOT distributes the funds annually to local DUI Task Forces to target impaired drivers throughout the state.
More than 600 municipal police departments state-wide and the Pennsylvania State Police will conduct DUI check-points and border-to-border patrols targeting impaired drivers.
In the 15 counties that make up PennDOT’s District 2 and District 9, there are six DUI and alcohol task forces representing counties from the Maryland border to the New York state line.
Last year, over the Labor Day holiday there were 16 alcohol-related crashes in the 15 counties with no fatalities. State-wide, there were 169 alcohol related crashes resulting in five fatalities.
PennDOT urges motorists to celebrate responsibly and designate a sober driver.
