Matthew Adams, 87 of Philipsburg died Thursday at Windy Hill Village. He was born Dec. 30, 1923 in Port Matilda and was the son of the late John Quincy and Mary (Blazosky) Adams.
He was a member of the Black Oak United Methodist Church of Port Matilda.
Mr. Adams was a graduate of the Philipsburg High School. He was a carpenter for the Local Union 1333 of State College and retired in 1978. Â He served 10 years as president and 17 years as vice president.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded a bronze star and served at Anzio Beach Head in Italy.
He was a member of the Osceola Loom #154; Port Matilda American Legion #536; Philipsburg VFW Lewis P. Jenkins Post 3450; Lincoln Club of Hawk Run; Carpathian Club of Hawk Run; Military Order of Cooties; Philipsburg Am Vets Post #159 where he served as Past Commander four times; Centre Hill Grange; and the Philipsburg BPO Elk Lodge#1173. He was also a life member of the Chester Hill Hose Co. and Bald Eagle FOP Lodge #51.
Mr. Adams’ first marriage was in 1948 in Altoona to Maxine E. Dawson, who died July 3, 1993. His was then married to Evelyn G. Neff Sept. 7, 1996 in Port Matilda and who died Feb. 11, 1999.
He’s survived by step-children, Thomas R. Neff of Bend, OR; Robert D. Neff and his wife Rachael, Roger L. Neff of Port Matilda and Cathy J. Ramsey and her husband, William, all of Port Matilda; Lee William Neff and his wife, Liz of Julian; Kenneth E. Neff of Howard; and Lisa A. Deibler and her husband, Douglas and Denise E. Witmer, all of Bellefonte; and Philip L. Neff of Julian.
Also surviving are four sisters, Lucy Kephart of Philipsburg; Anna Leforte of Alliance, OH; Elsie Wesesky   of Philipsburg; and Mabel Wilkinson and her husband, Donald of Bellefonte; 15 step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Hackman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre St. Philipsburg, with Pastor Samuel D. Reese officiating.
Burial will be in Black Oak Cemetery, Port Matilda, where military honors will be conducted by the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
Friends will be received from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
