Mildred “Mel” (Romeo) Gearhart, 85, of DuBois died Friday at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.
Born on June 30, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Mittiga) Romeo. She was a member of the American Legion Post 17 and the P.H.C. She enjoyed needle point, playing the piano and wine making.
Mrs. Gearhart was employed by Western Union Telegraph for 27 years before retiring in the 1960’s. She gave and received telegraphs, rain or shine during World War II to troops or their families. After retiring, she helped establish the family business, Evergreen Valley Vineyards where she ran the tasting room.
She’s survived by her husband, Isaac Gearhart, whom she married Jan. 10,1953 in St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church; a son, Mark Isaac and his wife, Lorraine Susan (Keller) Gearhart of Luthersburg; and a brother, Francis Romeo of DuBois.
Mrs. Gearhart is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joseph Romeo and a sister, Julia Pohe.
Friends will be received from 8 a.m. Monday until the hour of mass at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Sykesville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at the church with Father Richard J. Allen as celebrant. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.
