Umar Garvin faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment. Garvin represented himself during the hearing on Wednesday.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on May 24, 2011, two inmates, one of which was Garvin, were fighting. A third inmate then joined in. Guards separated the inmates. One guard attempted to cuff Garvin when he got loose, went over to another guard, and kicked him in the face. The guard who was kicked was on top of one of the other inmates involved in the scuffle in an attempt to secure him. The guard suffered a sprained jaw and a concussion.
