JOHNSTOWN – State Sen. John N. Wozniak today praised Senate passage of a bill outlawing the sale of dangerous chemicals being marketed as “bath salts” and “synthetic marijuana.”
“The spread of these substances and the frightening behavior they evoke has alarmed police officials statewide,” Wozniak said. “It’s important for the legislature to keep pace with efforts to make money marketing poison to young people.”
Senate Bill 1006 passed the Senate unanimously and his headed to Gov. Corbett for his signature. The Senate vote endorsed changes made in the House to widen expand the classes of chemicals covered by the ban, which will now include any new adaptations made by street retailers.
“The short–term effect from the use of these chemicals has been scary and we can’t even imagine what the long-term effect is, or what new ways they will find to evade the law,” Wozniak said. “This bill provides law enforcement with tools they need to stop this craziness.”
Bath salts have had the same effects on users as methamphetamines, causing a wide variety of side-effects including rapid heartbeat, paranoia and delusions. Synthetic marijuana has many of the same effects.
