HYDE – After building a 6-1 lead, Philipsburg stung the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team with seven-run outbursts in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Chiefs 20-3 in non-league action at the Bison Sports Complex Friday evening.
One night after pounding Reynoldsville 34-6, Clearfield was held to five hits by winner Greg Belko and Aaron Lidgett in falling to 2-3.
Pacing the Phils’ 23-hit attack against four Chief hurlers were Dylan Corl with three doubles, a triple and a single, Hayden Hayward and winning pitcher Greg Belko with three safeties apiece and Chad Speigle with two home runs.
Hayward and Speigle matched five-RBI efforts, while Corl drove in four runs.
Bobby Gallagher, Lidgett, Colten Wrye and Taylor Golemboski also had pairs of hits for the Phils.
Speigle accounted for Philipsburg’s 3-0 start against Ronny Ogden with a two-run homer in the second inning and a bases-loaded walk in the third.
The Phils doubled their output in the fifth when Corl tripled home Gallagher and scored on Hayward’s single, with an error upping their lead to 6-1.
Key blows in the sixth were Corl’s double, Hayward’s single and Lidgett’s homer, each chasing home two runners.
Hayward’s two-run double and Speigle’s two-run homer highlighted Philipsburg’s closing rally.
Belko surrendered all of Clearfield’s hits and runs before Lidgett came on in the sixth to retire six batters in a row, four on strikes.
Derek Danver singled twice and Coleman Kubala doubled for the Chiefs, who will play the Phils again Monday at Philipsburg.
Clearfield’s Jefferson County League game scheduled for Saturday has been postponed because the DuBois Area High School team won the District 6/9 Class AAAA championship and will be competing in the PIAA Playoffs next week.
