A sobriety checkpoint was conducted May 27 in Centre County by the Pennsylvania State Police. Fifteen vehicles were stopped, including one driving under the influence arrest, 11 traffic citations, and six warnings. Additional sobriety checkpoints will be conducted in the future. State police remind motorists not to drive if they’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
At 10 p.m. Saturday, state police were dispatched to the parking lot behind 16 South Front Street in Philipsburg Borough, Centre County. Troopers made contact with a 22-year-old Osceola Mills man, and consent to search was granted by him and was therefore conducted. Several small, plastic bags containing suspected marijuana and marijuana seeds and a glass smoking pipe used for smoking marijuana were recovered during the search. Charges for possession of drug paraphernalia and possessing a small amount of marijuana are to be filed against the man.
Minor injuries were reported after a single-vehicle accident at 6:28 p.m. May 27 along South Eagle Valley Road near Maplewood Manor in Worth Township, Centre County. A 19-year-old Tyrone man was traveling north when his vehicle traveled off the roadway for unknown reasons. After it left the roadway, he told police that it overturned several times, coming to a rest on its driver’s side. The man was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. His vehicle was towed from the scene. He’ll be cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
A 39-year-old Osceola Mills man was observed committing a traffic violation at 1:30 a.m. Saturday near Stone and Curtin Streets in Osceola Mills Borough, Clearfield County. He was found to be intoxicated and arrested for driving under the influence.
A hit-and-run accident was reported at 4:05 p.m. May 27 along South Front Street in Philipsburg Borough, Centre County. A 19-year-old Philipsburg man’s vehicle was stopped, allowing a vehicle ahead to turn. An unknown operator of a believed to be black Cadillac was traveling behind him and rear-ended him. After impact, the latter vehicle backed up and fled the scene, traveling west on Presqueisle Street toward Chester Hill. An incident of theft/forgery was reported at 6 p.m. May 26 at businesses throughout Philipsburg Borough and the surrounding areas in Centre County. A known male allegedly stole a 43-year-old Philipsburg woman’s checkbook. The men then allegedly wrote numerous checks at local businesses. Total loss is currently at $173.17. Charges of theft and forgery are currently pending.
At approximately 11:55 p.m. Monday, a traffic stop was initiated for a driven by a 33-year-old Tyrone man after he committed several violations along Interstate 99 southbound between mile marker 66 and mile maker 62 in Huston and Worth Townships, Centre County. Further investigation revealed that the man as under the influence of alcohol. He was taken into custody for DUI and transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for blood testing. Formal charges for DUI and several traffic violations are pending blood test results.
