MONROEVILLE — On Saturday May 28 the Monroeville Convention Center was the site of the Anti-Drug Athletes United (ADAU) PA State Powerlifting Championships.
The powerlifting event was just one competition among many at the Annual Pittsburgh Fit Expo. Others included bodybuilding, strongman, martial arts, the Kurt Angle Ultimate Teen Challenge, and the Franco Harris Teen Football Combine.
The highlight of the ADAU event was the record setting performance of 45-year-old Doug Mignot of Clearfield. Mignot broke all of the PA state records and all of the ADAU American records in the 319-pound, 45-49 age group to earn the outstanding PA lifter award.
Mignot lifted personal bests of 639 pounds in the squat and 440 pounds in the bench press. His 600 pound deadlift gave him a total of 1681.
Other lifters with local ties were Bugs Bayer of Rockton and Dennis Raybuck of Falls Creek. Both managed to pick up state titles.
65-year old Bayer squatted 490, benched 220, and deadlifted 540 for a total of 1251 in the 198-pound, 65-69 age group.
42-year old Raybuck squatted 562, benched 358, and deadlifted 600 for a total of 1521 to win the 275-pound class.
All of the lifters at all ADAU events are subject to performance-enhancing drug testing and are not permitted to wear supprtive lifting gear other than a lifting belt.
The next big competition for the ADAU will be the 2011 National Championships, which will be held at the Expo I Building at the Clearfield Driving Park on July 9 and 10.
