On Monday Curwensville traveled to Kane for two games and came away losing both of those 8-7 and then 9-1 in the nightcap.
In the first battle with Brockway the Rovers combined 16 hits, 11 bases on balls and five errors by the Tide pitching staff to pick up the easy win in a game that was stopped after six inning due to the mercy rule.
Curwensville had actually tied the score at 2-2 after three innings but the Rovers used an eight run fifth inning and a five run sixth frame to get the win.
A lot of young arms are seeing action for the Tide on the mound, plus playing other positions, and Tide head coach Denny Johns addressed the issue after both games, “Some of the young kids, like Brett Gardner, have impressed me. He (Gardner) threw strikes and kept the Brockway hitters off balance in the second game.”
Then Johns added, “These young guys are getting thrown into the fire and they’re understandably a little frustrated right now. But in the long run this experience will pay dividends for them and us as a team.”
Brockway was led on offense by Calliari with three hits, followed by Houston Fairman, Mike Vervoort and Max Hrinya each having two.
Hrinya and Calliari each had doubles in the 16-run Brockway explosion.
The Tide played much better in the second game against Brockway, and one bad inning, the second, pretty much did them in, losing 6-2.
Curwensville was the visiting team due to a rain out earlier this season that was scheduled to be played in Brockway.
The Rovers would score all of the runs they would need to pull off the doubleheader sweep by crossing home plate six times in second inning. It would be all the runs the Rovers would score in the contest which was called after five innings due to darkness.
Derek Buganza went the distance for Brockway giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out nine.
Fairman had two more hits in game 2 and Hrinya smacked another double on the day for the Rovers.
One of four hits was a double by sophomore Kyle Bloom for Curwensville against Buganza.
Johns closed his comments on the doubleheader, “We as a team are really frustrated at this point of the year. We continue the need to improve in all facets of our game starting tomorrow (Wednesday) against Johnsonburg.”
Curwensville, now 4-8 on the year, will once again play at home on Wednesday when they host the Rams of Johnsonburg in a game that will start at 4:15 pm.
