CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School softball team had little trouble disposing of Kane in an afternoon doubleheader Monday at Riverside Stadium. The Lady Tide used the mercy rule in both games to pick up the wins 11-1 and 12-2.
“I was pretty pleased with the better effort from the start,” said head coach Allen Leigey. “It was a better start today than Friday (10-3 loss to West Branch). After a tough practice on Saturday, we decided to bring our gloves to these games.”
On Friday at West Branch, early errors by the Tide set the tone for the game. On Monday, the very opposite was true. Committing no errors and allowing just five base runners in game one gave the hosts the opportunity to end the game early.
Curwensville scored four unearned runs on one hit through the first three innings before the bats dominated in the fourth. With one out, Taylor Goodman drew a walk before six straight hits put the game on ice. Goodman moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Madi Peterman’s hit. Tiffany Carter and Molly Demchak followed with doubles while Cheyenne Pentz, Sarah Wriglesworth and Katie Wriglesworth all hit safely and Hannah Bressler was hit by a pitch for an RBI to set the score at 9-0.
Kane manage a lone run in the fifth before Curwensville ended the contest with two scores on a walk, a hit by Carter, a sacrifice fly by Pentz and an error off the bat of Sarah Wriglesworth that forced the 10-run lead and the end of the game.
“I was pleased how we hit the ball today,” Leigey said. “It took us a while to get started, but then they started coming in bunches.”
Freshman Tierra Shope, who has handled the duties in the circle all year, walked the first batter of the game and then recorded 10 straight outs before the Lady Wolves could manage another runner. Her mound opponent Kyla Hoag broke up her no-hitter with one out in the fifth. Shope would allow just two hits in the game while walking two, striking out five and hitting one batter.
In game two, Shope continued her dominance of the Kane hitters giving up just three hits and striking out six. The right hander did walk six Wolves and hit another. However, she was able to scatter her flaws enough to keep the visitors in check.
In the meantime, the Curwensville bats were providing all the support she would need. Curwensville got hits out of seven batting positions in the first game, and all nine starting batters hit safely in game two.
Pentz was 4-for-4 in game two including two doubles to pace the Lady Tide attack. Peterman and Bressler added two hits each while Carter and Sarah Wriglesworth both added doubles. Curwensville also scored runs in each of the five innings played in the nightcap, including six runs in the fifth to put the game at the 10-run mercy rule that ended it.
“We’re right where we wanted to be at the end of the day,” Leigey admitted. “We wanted to be 8-4 today and, hopefully, get to Johnsonburg on Wednesday and take care of business to be 9-4.”
Pentz ended the day 5-for-7 with four RBIs including the two doubles. Peterman, Carter and Demchak all turned in a three-hit effort for the day. Demchak added for runs batted in with Bressler and Peterman adding three each.
Curwensville will try to best Johnsonburg next on the road Wednesday. On Thursday a double-header will take place in Brockway with an early 2:30 start.
