DUBOIS – Updates were given regarding Sandy Township’s intentions to appeal their census results.
The official population of Sandy Township dropped enough to cost the township a quarter of a million dollars in funding from over the next decade, according to Supervisor Brady LaBorde.
Certain aspects of the latest census have not seemed to add up correctly to the Township Manager Dick Castonguay. He used Treasure Lake as an example where the numbers don’t seem to add up. According to Castonguay, the census states Treasure Lake lost 144 homes compared to a decade ago. According to the township there have been around 200 new homes constructed in Treasure Lake. Castonguay suggested that part of the problem with Treasure Lake and the Census is that the community relies on a PO box mail system for every resident. Census forms aren’t mailed to PO boxes.
There were around 421 new homes constructed in Sandy Township within the last ten years excluding group homes. The township does not have the numbers yet for the number of constructed group homes.
Castonguay told the supervisors that it looks like the township will have to pay to perform its own census if it appeals as an under reported population did not qualify for a paid recount.
