PHILIPSBURG – During the month of April, motorists who operated vehicles in the areas patrolled by the Philipsburg-based state police traveled through numerous severe storms.
In a press release this weekend, Cpl. Robert F. Thomas announced their barracks would like to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents. He reminded motorists if they must operate their vehicle with the windshield wipers on, their headlights must also be turned on.
According to Thomas, the law also states any motorist who is approaching or passing an emergency response area should pass in a lane that’s not adjacent to that of the emergency response area. If passing in a non-adjacent lane is impossible, illegal or unsafe, they should pass the area at a “careful and prudent reduced speed.”
Any distractions, such as cellular phones, should not be used while any vehicle is moving. If a call or text message is received when a motorist is driving, the “safest thing to do” is to pull over and accept the same, he said. In addition, Thomas said that wearing a seatbelt is required by Pennsylvania law, and motorists and occupants should be wearing them at all times.
“It’s been proven that seatbelt usage saves lives,” he said.
