Lady Dragons Beat Lady Bisons 10-3 with Seven Runs in Sixth Inning

HYDE – Home runs by winning pitcher Kylie Gunnett and Ashley Smith highlighted a seven-run sixth inning that broke a tie game and lifted visiting Central to a 10-3 victory over Clearfield in high school softball action at the Bison Sports Complex Friday afternoon.

The Lady Bisons had taken a 3-1 lead with five of their eight hits off Gunnett in the third frame of the Mountain League Allegheny Division make-up game.

B.J. Bowman singled home Andrea Butler with the tying run, and Suzie Colesar followed with a hit to drive in Melinda Owens and Bowman.

That was all Clearfield (3-6) could muster off Gunnett, who struck out eight and walked two. She had shut out the Lady Bisons 3-0 on a five-hitter with nine strikeouts on April 21.

Smith’s three-run homer was the key blow off Heather Picard in the sixth. Gunnett’s was a solo shot.

Marissa Ayers also homered, Allie Walters collected three singles and Taylor Garman and Kate Blattenberger aded two singles apiece for the Scarlet Dragons, the division leaders at 5-1.

Butler, who doubled, and McKenzie Moore each had two hits for the Lady Bisons.

Rachel Hoffman started in the circle and then came back in to relieve Picard in the sixth. Hoffman struck out five and walked one in five innings, giving up only four hits and one run.

The defeat left Clearfield 3-6 and winless in three division outings.

The Lady Bisons are scheduled to host Tyrone Monday, Hollidaysburg Tuesday, Philipsburg-Osceola Wednesday and Huntingdon Thursday before going on the road to test Punxsutawney Friday.

Also, the division game at Philipsburg-Osceola that was postponed for the second time last Monday now is set for Tuesday, May 10.
