HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett toured the Chester Community Charter School, telling students that “having a choice means having a chance.”
“Not everyone has the same talents or dreams,” Corbett told an assembly of students after touring the school. “But we all have some kind of talent and we all have some kind of dream.
“And we’re all entitled to learn in a place where we can develop those talents and make those dreams come true. That’s what’s great about this school — you got to choose.
“By succeeding here, you are demonstrating to other students and parents statewide that having a choice means having a chance,” Corbett added.
The Chester Community Charter School started in 1998 with 97 children. It is now the largest charter school in the state for grades K-8, with more than 2,700 students in a facility with two campuses, 10 buildings and a new gymnasium.
The school takes pride in its academic success, including three middle school students who recently captured a tri-state championship for African-American history.
Corbett, who has long supported school choice for Pennsylvania, praised the school for setting a positive example for other communities to follow.
“We are so proud to be welcoming Corbett to our school,” said Steven Lee, the school’s chief executive officer. “It is a testament to the tremendous academic success we have achieved. Chester Community Charter School is the logical place for the governor to witness how effective the charter school model can be as an alternative to traditional public education.”
