University Park, Pa. — Sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) has been named to the first team All-Big Ten for the first time in her career.
Januskova went 14-8 on the season including five victories over ranked opponents. Januskova was ranked in the ITA for most of the season as high as No. 81 and is currently ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic region, according to the ITA.
She defeated Purdue’s No. 54 Jennifer Rabot and Minnesota’s No. 74 Natalia Pintusava in two of her bigger wins of the season. Januskova helped the Nittany Lions improve their win total from the 2009-10 season with six including two Big Ten victories.
Also receiving honors at the banquet was freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Toronto, Canada) who was named a Sportsmanship Honoree after suffering a tough injury during the season and battling back to finish strong. The award, according to The Big Ten is given to "The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior."
Bedard earned four singles victories for the Nittany Lions and three wins in doubles. She was crucial in both Big Ten victories as she won the clinching match against Minnesota and No. 70 Michigan State.
