CLEARFIELD — In a make up from Tuesday’s rain out, the Clearfield Area High School boy’s and girl’s track teams were swept by Penns Valley on Thursday afternoon.
The girls were beaten 86-55, while the boys were outscored 96-45. The Lady Bisons saw their record fall back to the .500 mark at 5-5. The boys haven’t been able to crack the win column yet and sit at 0-10.
Despite the losses, head coach John Jacob believed his squads performed well, “We went up against a very good Penns Valley team tonight. Where we are a strong team in the sprints, Penns Valley was stronger and they were able to get the victory on the girl’s side. Our long distance runners did a very good job tonight winning all the distance events on the track.  Johanna Ryan, Lauren Conrad, Juliana Mellgard and Carlee Freeburg really looked sharp tonight and were able to do their job on the track. Also the girl’s throwers – Breanna Peters, Rachel Thompson and Amber Claycomb – continued to perform, sweeping the shot put and claiming first in the discus. On the boy’s side we had some bright spots. Damion McGary once again had a nice night in the javelin, throwing a season best 161 ft 10 in to claim first place. The other throwers on the boy’s side – Corey Knepp, Steve Smith and Cliff Hill – also improved tremendously. Beau Swales  was the only multiple winner tonight winning both jumping events (long and triple) and anchoring the 4×100 relay.”
Competing in their final home meet for the Bisons were seniors Johann Ryan, Jack Mellgard, Caleb Baas, Adam Jury, and Cliff Hill.
With the regular season almost over, Coach Jacob had this to add, “Despite losing both meets we continue to make huge strides as we conclude the season.  We are looking forward to wrapping up our regular season against Central Mountain and Hollidaysburg. If the girls can pick up one more win against either team we can have our first winning season in over 10 years, which will be a huge accomplishment in or program.”
The Bisons thinclads will be back in action when they travel to face Central Mountain on Wednesday.
