CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Area High School girl’s track and field team played rude host when they swept Tyrone 109-36 and Bellefonte 87-63 on Tuesday to up their dual meet record to 2-3 on the young season.
The boy’s team, however, was swept by the visitors to the Bison Sports Complex to drop to 0-5 on the year. Tyrone won 108-33 and Bellefonte won 98-43.
According to Bison Head Coach John Jacob, it was the girls’ first dual meet victory in about five years!
Jacob noted that, “Everywhere on the track and in the field we stepped up to the challenge. It’s been a long time since I have seen performances like that out of our girl’s team. We really practiced well the past couple of weeks and the hard work paid off where it counts.”
Four-time winners on the day for the girls were Jessica Shomo (100m, 4×100 relay, long jump, triple jump), Johanna Ryan (4×800 relay, 1600m, 800m, 4×400 relay), and Jill Heichel (100 hurdles, 4×100 relay, 300 hurdles, 4×400 relay).
Triple-winners for the girls were Morgen Turner (400m, 4×100 relay, 4×400 relay) and Rachel Thompson (4×100 relay, discus, javelin).
Coach Jacob commented on the reason for the girl’s team’s improvement from previous year’s teams, “Another area we have improved from last year is our strong second and third runners. We are very deep in a lot of areas. Courtney Smith has strengthened our hurdles and sprints, Juliana Mellgard in distance and throws, and Kara Thorp in the sprints. I am very proud of the way the girls performed and look forward to seeing them perform in the upcoming meets.”

The top point scorer on the boy’s squad was Beau Swales who picked up two victories versus Bellefonte. Swales was on the winning 4×100 relay team and also won the triple jump.
Coach Jacob had this to say about the boy’s team, “The boys are still very young or “green.” It’s going to take a while for the boys to develop into a complete team. We are still improving in all areas at practice and in meets. On the track or in the field, little mistakes compound as the race goes on, and with such a young team the mistakes come quite often. The boys are making huge improvements but are still learning what it takes to have a complete race, three good throws, or three good jumps. As the year goes on I expect the boys to become more and more competitive.”
