IRVONA – Work to replace the Irvona truss bridge on state Route 53 will get underway Monday with the placement of signage and daylight traffic control. The new bridge is being built on a slightly different alignment, adjacent to the existing truss. There should be no significant impacts to traffic at this time, with motorists able to use the existing bridge.  A local detour will be in place later this spring as work progresses and PennDOT will provide a project update prior to the detour.
Project work includes replacing the current bridge with a new, four-span, concrete beam bridge, reconstruction of the Route 53/Route 3005 (St. Lawrence Road) intersection, flood protection embankment, roadway paving, pavement markings and miscellaneous construction.Â
New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc. is the contractor on this $4 million job.
All work is weather dependent. PennDOT expects traffic to be on the new bridge late this year.Â
The Irvona truss spans Clearfield Creek in the borough of Irvona, Clearfield County. The truss is 71 years old; built in 1940. Â It is 274 feet long and carries 4,412 vehicles a day.Â
PennDOT advises drivers to obey posted speed limits and follow detour signs. For more information on roadway construction and maintenance operations, visit PennDOT’s website at www.dot.state.pa.us.
