HARRISBURG – Clearfield County will receive a pair of state grants for efforts to preserve the local environment announced state Sen. John N. Wozniak.
Clearfield County’s Solid Waste Authority will receive $3,702 for holding a household hazardous waste collection event last year and the Central PA Sewage Agency will receive $5,144 for enforcement of regulations regarding sewage facilities.
“Local government is crucial to the effort to preserve the environment for future generations,” Wozniak said. “It’s important for state officials to recognize the role they play and the financial pressure they are under.”
The hazardous waste grant is being awarded by the state Department of Environmental Protection under the Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grant Program.
Household Hazardous Wastes are those wastes produced in households that are hazardous in nature, but are not regulated as hazardous waste, under federal and state laws. Each person in Pennsylvania produces an average of four pounds of HHW each year or about 25,000 tons each year statewide. Included are such items as old paints and paint related products, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, degreasers and other car care products. Such consumer waste products, if carelessly managed can, and frequently do, create environmental and public health hazards.
Municipalities, corporations, public utilities, trade associations and small businesses are authorized to sponsor collection programs for household hazardous waste. Eligible entities include households, political subdivisions, and small businesses. The sponsor must register the program, in advance, with DEP.
